Sony Reveals Project Morpheus
At the Game Developers Conference this week, Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, revealed the company’s long rumored virtual reality headset.
Currently referred to as “Project Morpheus,” Yoshida confirmed through a post on the PlayStation Blog that the headset will feature a head mounted display with 1080p resolution and a 90 degree field of view.
The headset will track movement through built in accelerometer and gyroscope sensors, as well as utilizing the PlayStation Camera, which Yoshida confirmed will be required to use the headset.
The headset will be compatible with the DualShock 4 controller and the PlayStation Move in order to “deliver an easy-to-use, plug-and-play VR experience.”
Within the comments of the post, Yoshida was quick to emphasize that this is a protoype, and likely not the final build that will eventually make its way to market.
Despite still being in the prototype stage, Yoshida seems confident that games will benefit greatly from use of the headset.
“I have long dreamed about VR and the possibilities it brings in regards to game development. This new technology will deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real.”
