Always-On Light For DualShock 4

The light bar on the DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 can’t be turned off, even to save battery power, confirmed Sony’s Worldwide Studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida, on Twitter.

He answered a question by a fan who wanted to know “Can I turn off the lightbar on the DS4 so the battery lasts longer”. The answer from Yoshida was just a simple “no”.

Without the PlayStation Camera, the light bar will be rendered useless. The PlayStation 4 was intended to bundled with the PlayStation Camera, so there would be no need to turn off the light at the back of the controller. However, Sony changed their plan and took the Camera away from the bundle in order to drop the price of the PlayStation 4.

For PlayStation 4 buyers who don’t want to buy the Camera along with the PlayStation 4, the light will just be a meaningless, battery draining annoyance. Everyone will likely get used to it, but rechargeable batteries will definitely be a good investment if you plan on purchasing a PlayStation 4.
